What age will my child play?

USA Volleyball sets the age of play definitions based on the birth month/year of a player. We have included a simple chart to give you a glance of what age group you should tryout for in the upcoming season. Please note...this may be different than your child age as of today.

Understanding Team Composition & Playing Time

One of the most common questions families have concerns team placement and playing time. Here's how we approach these important aspects:

Our Team Composition:

  • We typically roster 10-12 players per team, though teams may be smaller or larger when positional needs require it
  • Team placement is at the sole discretion of the Directors/Coaches based on skill level, experience, age eligibility, and positional balance
  • Sometimes we can't create multiple teams within an age group when we have too many players at one position (like outside hitters) and not enough at others (like setters or middle blockers)

Our Playing Time Philosophy:

  • Equal playing time is not guaranteed on any team - we emphasize earned playing time based on performance, effort, and team needs (see D.I.G.S. page)
  • Practice time is where players can expect equal court time- all players participate in drills, skill development, and team training
  • Game/tournament time is earned based on practice performance, preparation, and what's best for the team (see D.I.G.S. page)
  • Different players develop different roles - some may specialize in certain rotations or match situations

Our Communication Policy:

  • We expect players to approach coaches first, before parents get involved
  • Never approach coaches about playing time during tournaments - we have a 24-hour policy requiring waiting after tournaments before these conversations
  • Our coaches encourage and are available for conversations to help athletes learn, grow, and mature

What This Means: We emphasize skill development, teamwork, and competitive growth. Athletes learn to earn their opportunities while developing resilience, work ethic, and team-first mentality that serves them well beyond volleyball.
